WHERE?
WELCOME to DMG01 Photography, a "Funtography" project dedicated entirely to imagery captured via the Nintendo Gameboy Camera, and the original DMG-01 Gameboy Unit. Pure and authentic from the original hardware, absolutely ZERO emulation, for better or worse.

WHAT?
FUN FACTS:
** The Gameboy Camera features a 128x128 pixel CMOS sensor that then stores pixels in a bitmap format at 128x112, grayscale digital images at 2bit depth, using the 4-color palette of the Gameboy system itself.
** The software and camera hardware for the system were all contained in a single cartridge that could be plugged into and used with any Gameboy unit from the original 1989 DMG-01, all the way thru the Gameboy Advance series devices and the "Super Gameboy" adapter unit for the SNES.
** The Gameboy Camera was released in 1998 alongside a companion peripheral called the Gameboy Printer, a low resolution thermal printer for printing pictures from the camera as well as images for compatible game titles. In the U.S., it was called Gameboy Camera. In Japan, it was called the Pocket Camera.
** Although the original DMG-01 "gray brick" Gameboy was released in 1989, and the camera in 1998, it's all thanks to the camera's wide compatibility over many Gameboy generations I can work the way I want to. Due to my childhood fondness and attachment to the DMG-01, I am able to combine the two products to advance my hobby!
** As long as this gallery is online, it's always slowly, even if very slowly, going to keep growing in size, not that anyone could technically care, but it's more for my own satisfaction if anything....

WHY?
This is strictly for fun!
I have long standing love for the original Gameboy, going far back into my childhood. I was always a strongly introverted child who was much better off alone than around people. I used to truly live in just my own world as much as possible. As such, I developed strong and intense emotional bonds to the things that made me feel most alive, which at such a young age was music, and my tech. Somethings never change perhaps.
I loved every video game console I had growing up, as well as my personal computer which over the years was just a few Macintosh machines, and oh man did I live and breathe my music. These things, in my mind, strongly represented my identity, as well as connected me to myself and that bubble I knew I lived in.
There was something special about the Gameboy, because between that little machine and the advent of the Walkman, I couldn't have been a happier kid. I loved having the ability to carry my music with me, which usually meant pockets stuffed with cassettes all the time, even at school where I wasn't allowed to listen to them, and being able to lose myself in my games. Somehow, that pea-green screen was something I got so used to, I didn't notice the visual ghosting and didn't think too hard on having to find the right lighting and angles to be able to see the games. It was all just normal and all in all brought me a lot of comfort. I only wish the Pokemon games had come out sooner than they did!
Flash forward to a much later adulthood, I learned of the home-brew communities and that there was so much still being done with these machines, modifications and all. In the mid 2000-teens I started learning LSDJ, and wrote music on the Gameboy. I sunk some money into that, and believe me, that was a big deal to me at the time. I eventually lost the desire to sink into the music writing and just kind of stopped. Now here in 2025, I picked up the Gameboy Camera. I never knew it existed, and it came out while I was already well on my way thru high school, and at that time in my life, gaming was lower on my overall list of things, I was far more obsessed with my Mac. At any rate, now that I know this camera system existed, I acquired a few, learned some basic soldering to update them, and here we are. Just a minor passion project from a strongly nostalgic, middle-aged fellow who desperately hangs on to the very few things that bring him any happiness in this life. What a wonderful little tie-in to happier times.
